Forest roads are the basic infrastructure for accessing forest resources and transporting wood raw material. Work in this area covers road planning, route optimization, road density, and maintenance, as well as long-distance timber transport. Technical requirements, transport costs, and environmental impacts often pull in different directions, and much of the research in this field is concerned with finding an acceptable balance among them.
