Research on biomass supply chains treats the production, collection, transport, and storage of forest biomass, up to its delivery for energy or industrial use, as a single planning problem. Because biomass is a dispersed, low-density resource, transport and storage costs largely determine its economic feasibility. Work in this area therefore concentrates on optimization problems such as logistics network design, cost analysis, and resource allocation.
